MCC Cut by the Governor; Cultural Earmarks Eliminated
Today, Governor Mitt Romney eliminated $425 million from this year's (FY 07) budget. At his press conference, the Governor called it a 1.7% across the board budget cut. However, the Governor has eliminated all funding ($22,750,000) for the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism, which will paralyze all cultural tourism marketing. The elimination of this funding not only will reduce MCC funding for this year by $700,000, but also eliminate all cultural spending designations commonly known as earmarks.
House Speaker Sal DiMasi (D-Boston) issued the following statement in response to the Governor's unilateral actions: "[Romney] unbalanced this budget through his own actions and now is covering his political hide at the expense of families and communities across the state. In the end these cuts may be restored, but his legacy as Governor will not be. His term in office will be remembered, if at all, as four years when personal ambition ruled over the common good." as quoted by State House News Service.
In conversation with our legislative allies, we are working on strategies to restore this funding. Cultural organizations expecting earmarked funding this year should contact MAASH.
MAASH will keep you informed of further developments.
